Veterinary Assistant - Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County (HSVB)POSITION SUMMARY: The Veterinary Assistant is responsible for the medical care and monitoring of the health and welfare of spay/neuter animals under the direction of the Staff Veterinarian and Medical Shift Supervisor. The Veterinary Assistant will be supportive of HSVB goals by doing whatever it takes to ensure success both within our department and in support of the organization's objectives. He/She will remain focused on serving the needs of our animals and customers by supporting the team members and being accountable in all day to day activities.This position reports directly to the Medical Shift Supervisor.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Administers treatments and procedures to animals.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of animal restraint and handling techniques, as well as general animal safety practices, including recognizing animal behavior patterns.
  • Sets up prep and surgery rooms, and cleans rooms after procedures. Keeps surgical supplies up to date for everyday use, including packs, drapes, and gowns.
  • Performs accurate data entry as assigned by the Medical Shift Supervisor, including maintaining medical records.
  • Operates and maintains medical equipment.
  • Inventory supply and management as necessary under the direction of the Medical Shift Supervisor.
  • Ensures biohazard waste management SOP is followed.
  • Assists with moving animals from and to cages.
  • Monitors animals before, during and post-surgery.
  • Assists with dental prophylaxis.
  • Assists with collecting samples (heartworm tests, fecal, urinalysis, parvo, and others).
  • Assists staff veterinarians with necropsies as needed.
  • Assists with transporting animals to and from appointments when necessary.
  • Assists with cleaning routine in the veterinary clinic and surgery rooms as well as with cleaning and animal care in hospital kennels.
  • Assists in other departments as directed by the Medical Shift Supervisor or the Hospital Manager.
  • Performs x-rays and demonstrates understanding of radiological safety procedures.
  • Performs and assists with euthanasia's using injection methods upon request.
  • Shares and coordinates with other Veterinary Assistants
  • Assists in pharmacy duties, under supervision, as needed.
  • Testifies in court regarding HSVB business and humane law investigations if applicable.
  • Becomes knowledgeable of HSVB's SOPs and is able to implement when appropriate.
  • Provides courteous and knowledgeable services regarding animal information, medical care, and treatment instructions to guests, outside medical professionals, and employees.
  • Promotes and ensures a safe working environment at all times and follows HSVB safety procedures.
  • Wears appropriate, clean uniform, and a nametag at all times and maintains a professional demeanor.
  • Assists with reception duties as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.Minimum Job Requirements:
    • COVID-19 vaccinated.

    • High School Diploma or GED required. - May be increased if applicable.
    • Must be 18 years of age or older.
    • Valid Florida Driver's License with clean driving record. - if applicable
    • Able to lift and carry 50 lbs. for a moderate distance as well as carrying furniture up stairs.
    • Ability to operate in a variety of weather and traffic conditions.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills, demonstrates organization and attention to detail.
    • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate to diverse audiences.
    • Maturity and confidence in dealing with the public.
    • Team Player - works well with others, collaborative, strong communication and listening skills, sees the needs of the customer and the mission as greater than their own.
    • Possess integrity and ethics, must be honorable and honest.
    • Availability to work weekends and evenings.
    • Commitment to on-going learning and growth.EDUCATION, SKILL, EXPERIENCE: Minimum one-year clinical experience and/or shelter experience preferred. Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and database environments, preferred. Experience, especially with databases, preferred. Excellent oral and written communications skills.Salary: $11.00 - $15.00 an hour depending on skills, experience, and qualifications.Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time, as well as move and traverse within the shelter facility for extended periods of time, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is required to communicate, converse with, convey information to, express oneself, and exchange information with shelter staff and the general public.The employee must regularly move, transport, and position items weighing up to 10 pounds, frequently moves, transports, and positions items weighing up to 25 pounds, and occasionally moves, transports, and positions items weighing up to 50 pounds.
