4/22/2022Position Summary:Position Function: Provide a variety of
funtions for the Pathology Department within the Surgical Grossing
Room and Frozen Section Area. In addition, the certified PA will
perform other duties as assigned and required. II. Job
Relationships: Reports to Lab Administrative Director. Daily work
overseen by on site Pathologists. Must be able to collaborate and
effectively communicate with Pathologists and technical staff in
Cytology, Histology and other laboratory departments. Must interact
with couriers and medical staff. III. Authority: Has the authority
to: ---Contact physicians to discuss clarification of surgical
specimens. ---Access patient records in Meditch and CoPath computer
systems to obtain additional information needed for the processing
of surgical specimens ---Contact physician's offices regarding
patient demographic accuracy and/or specimen information accuracy.
---Address initial customer complaints and/or problems related to
the handling and processing/scheduling of specimens. ---Contact
Biomedical Engineering regarding equipment issues. IV. A.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions: I. Assist in the preparation
and performance of surgical specimen examinations which include:
---Registering patient demographic information into the computer
---Accessioning specimens into Meditech and CoPath computer system
---Assuring appropriate specimen accessioning and numbering of all
surgical specimens. ---Obtaining clinical history including scans,
X-rays, etc. when indicated. ---Writing cassettes with two
identifiers as needed or using the cassette printing system.
---Describing gross anatomic geatures, dissecting surgical
specimens and preparing tissue for microscopic examination under
direct/indirect supervision of a pathologist. ---Obtaining
biological specimens for analysis and performing special techniques
as directed by the pathologist. ---Photographing all pertinent
specimens. ---Preparing frozen section slides for the pathologist
as needed. ---Assuring proper maintenance of equipment, adequancy
of supply inventory and cleanliness of the Surgical Grossing Room
and Frozen Section Area. II. Miscellaneous Responsibilities:
---Assist, initiate, institute and/or accomplish certain
specialized procedures or duties as designated by the pathologists.
---Keep current on new technologies, procedures and methodologies
that may enhance patient care and/or increase efficiency in the
laboratory. ---Follow all orginizational, departmental, section and
hospital policies, i.e. Fire, Safety, Hazardous Waste, HIPPA
regulations, etc. ---Meet departmental time frame of inspection
readiness at all times. Ensure ongong compliance with all
applicable regulatoryagencies including, but not limited to JCAHO,
CAP, OSHA, DPH, HCFA, NCCLA, CLIA and HIPPA. ---Develop and perform
QA monitors to assure continued safe practices and superior patient
care. ---Conduct self in a professional manner at all time,
(apparel, telephone etiquette, staff/peer interactions, etc.).
---Maintain a clutter-free work environment by working neatly,
efficiently and cleaning the work area as needed. ---Strive for
continuous improvements in service and quality. ---Perform specimen
pick-ups in main OR or other areas of the hospital as designated.
(Rare instances). ---Dispose of tissue when necessary as per
laboratory policy. V. Reporting Requirements: Report immediately to
Lab Administrative Director and Pathologists any deviation of
normal operation or unusal occurances related to the laboratory.
Report to Pathologists any suspicious results uncovered during
dissection of surgical specimens. VI. Accountability: Accountable
for: ---Accurate dissections, description and processing of grossed
specimens. ---Maintaining the confidentiality and security of all
hospital, medical staff, and/or patient related data and
information. ---Abiding by all relevant hospital procedures
including infection control policies and procedures. ---Meeting
production expectations as specified by the Pathologists and Lab
Administrative DirectorLicensure/Certification/Education

testing.Sample accessioning, and proper pre-analytical
requirements.Adequately describes the gross description of surgical
samples.Assists in Frozens Section preparation and Equipment
Maintenance.Specialized Skills (Preferred):List any preferred
knowledge and skills necessary to perform this job.3-5 years of
