Job Description:

BASIC FUNCTION:# Works under the direct supervision of the team leader and/or SPD coordinator; performs work in the preparation area and/or decontamination area as scheduled.# Ensures that all necessary supplies and equipment are readily available to the medical/surgical nursing team so that they may provide optimum patient care.# In doing so, the Sterile Prep Technician will receive and process reusable goods from all areas of the hospital in accordance with established procedures.# Assists in the direction and education of new employees. SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:# None NATURE AND SCOPE:# This position has interactions with patients, clinical and support staff as well as management and physicians. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:# Supports the mission, vision and values of the hospital. Responsible for working in a safe and protective manner at all times, keeping in mind that safety and environmental hazards are the responsibility of all employees for themselves, other staff members and patients. In conjunction with team leader is responsible for monitoring sterilization assurance program, maintains sterilization records. Receives, sorts, cleans, inspects, assembles, packages, and identifies instruments and trays used throughout the hospital and hospital network. Initiates and participates in monitoring, cleaning, and outdated supplies program. Issues needed equipment and supplies to the OR team as requested. Process soiled items/equipment/case carts. Loads and operates washer. Loads and empties dryer. Prepares and runs daily biological monitor tests. Prepares and runs daily Bowie Dick test. Document biological monitors. Document hydrogen peroxide loads. Loads and operates steam sterilizer. Loads and operates hydrogen peroxide sterilizer/aerator. Assemble trays. Wraps/packages items to be sterilized. Operates heat sealer. Dust cover items sterilized for long-term shelf life. Deliver, verify, and put away processed items to the operating room (compile Case Sheet Status Report.) Compile missing list and report to charge person. Assist in inspection, retrieval, reprocessing of sterile goods according to expiration dates or event relation. Assists other personnel in the department concerning instruments and supplies used in the OR and/or prepared in the sterile prep area. Maintains clear lines of communication with the operating room personnel; records and delivers supplies as requested, provide OR personnel with assistance and advise whenever possible. Attends in-services and is compliant with essential education without prompting from manager. Performs other duties as assigned. CORE COMPETENCIES:# Must acquire a thorough knowledge of steam and gas sterilizers, aerators, cart and instrument washers, ultrasonic cleaner, heat sealers and instruments. Must be able to assemble instrument trays in a neat and orderly manner. Must be accurate in work. Most time spent on feet, often pushing various types of supply carts. Time spent in decontamination area is sometimes humid and noisy. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:# High School Diploma or equivalent. Certification as a central service technician required upon hire or ability to obtain within six (6) months. Must have had experience in hospital environment, however preference will be given to a person who has had previous experience in central service, operating room or has completed central service technician#s course.
